EfficientDynamics is BMW's umbrella term for a range of technologies used to resist fuel consumption and increase driving pleasure. Everything in the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is designed for maximum efficiency, a virtue that comes as standard in every car. This includes pioneering aerodynamics as well as advanced engine technology. Thanks to Brake Energy Regeneration, even the surplus kinetic energy of the car that becomes available when you lift your foot off the accelerator or step on the brake is not wasted. It is converted into electricity and fed into the battery. This means less work for the engine, and corresponding fuel saving. It's just one of the many features that contribute to make the BMW driving experience more energy-efficient than ever before.

When you’re getting into the new BMW 5 Series Saloon for the first time, you'll want to pause for a moment to take in the ambience. What you'll notice right away are the clean lines and the subtle harmony of the design: uncluttered, elegant surfaces with neatly arranged control elements meeting high-class materials and top class workmanship.

The unavoidable immediate effect is a feeling that you have arrived in exactly the right place. You'll notice that the design does not only look good; it is also extremely functional, with everything designed for typical BMW driving pleasure. Every control and display is ergonomically optimised, angled towards the driver and located in just the place you would want to find it. When you glance towards the centre console, your eyes alight easily on the perfectly integrated 10.2-inch Control Display of the optional Navigation System Professional. It means you can focus all your attention on the road ahead.

On the other side, integrated in the exterior mirror, the optional Lane Change Warning System features a flashing indicator warning you of any vehicles in your blind spot. In front of you is the optional Head-up Display, projecting important data directly into your field of vision – such as extra navigation instructions for any complex road layout coming up ahead. You never have to avert your eyes from the road – this is intelligent technology, intelligently integrated into an interior that exudes a unique sense of style - a driver assistance system that is without peer in its class.

BMW Efficient Dynamics

BMW was one of the first manufacturers to pursue the goal of efficient driving technologies, as a part of our multiple award-winning sustainable strategy. BMW Efficient Dynamics represents the most comprehensive package of innovative technologies for reducing fuel consumption and emissions – while simultaneously increasing driving dynamics – that is currently in standard production. With it, BMW has been able to reduce to CO2 emissions of its entire fleet by approximately 30% since 1995. 31 models produce less than 140g of CO2 per kilometre, and BMW has already rolled out more than two million vehicles equipped with EfficientDynamics. BMW intends to achieve a further 25% reduction by 2020.

BMW EfficientDynamics technologies interact perfectly to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while maximising performance and dynamism. Less fuel, more driving pleasure – seeming paradox that BMW has resolved once and for all. For the benefit of the environment and the enjoyment of the driver.

Auto Start-Stop.

Switches the engine off without affecting other functions whenever the car comes to a rest, at traffic lights for example, saving fuel and reducing emissions. The engine is restarted automatically within a fraction of a second.

Brake Energy Regeneration.

The alternator disengages automatically when the battery is fully charged, only re-engaging when the battery needs charging. This reduces the demands on the engine, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. In addition, when the car is braking or coasting, the system automatically engages the alternator to charge the battery, recycling energy that would otherwise be wasted.

Electric Power Steering.

The electric power steering support only uses energy as needed to assist steering. When a Steering wheel is static, for example when driving on a straight road, the electric motor is inactive.

Optimum Shift Indicator.

Timely gear shifts are one of the effective ways to save fuel. A small visual display on the vehicle’s instrument panel shows the optimum gear for a more fuel-efficient driving style.

There are engines and there are BMW engines. A BMW engine delivers a characteristically smooth, compelling and free-revving response, yet it’s also remarkably fuel efficient. Auto Start-Stop, fitted on all four-cylinder models with a six-speed manual transmission, switches off the engine when power isn’t needed, such as traffic lights or in a tailback. Whichever engine you choose, Brake Energy Regeneration enables the car’s battery to recharge between periods of deceleration – when, for instance, you take your foot off the throttle as you approach traffic lights. These innovations, collectively known as EfficientDynamics at BMW, serve just one purpose: to make every BMW as satisfying to own as it is to drive.
