BMW 3 Series Convertible

Overview

The basis for every day: a long wheelbase, elongated bonnet and wide double kidney. With the roof closed, the curved, coupé-style roof lines never fail to impress. With the roof open it is the flat rear and short windblock that impart the unique feeling of sitting directly under an open sky.

Luggage compartment

What makes joy 365 days a year even more enjoyable? Opening the hardtop on a sunny day, packing up the golf bags and taking to the road. Thanks to its sophisticated construction, the BMW 3 Series Convertible is able to offer plenty of room for your luggage even when the roof is down.

Colours and materials

Elegant or sporty – choose from the perfect combination of colours and high-quality materials that underline the elegant and athletic character of the BMW 3 Series Convertible.

Petrol engines BMW 320i, 325i, 330i and 335i

How do you improve an engine that has already won the Engine of the Year Award six times? With a Twin Scroll turbocharger, Valvetronic and direct petrol injection for a start.

The improvements are evolutionary as each one of the three technologies has been developed further. What is revolutionary however is how they compliment one another. In the BMW TwinPower Turbo in the BMW 335i they are combined in one complete package. The result: 225 kW (306 hp), 400 Nm across a wide speed range and silky smoothness. And all this at a fuel consumption level of just 8.8 l/100 km.

Diesel engines (BMW 320d, 325d and 330d)

Below 140 g/km CO2 – for most convertibles this is a target for the future. The four-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW 320d undercuts this limit with the same amount of ease as it propels the BMW 3 Series Convertible.

380 Nm and 135 kW (184 hp) are power and performance levels most engines never achieve. The engine in the BMW 320d not only achieves these, it does this on just 5.1 litres over 100 kilometres and with just 135 g/km CO2. Frictional losses have been reduced by around 3.5 percent compared with its direct predecessor.

For that deciding tenth of a second: the BMW TwinPower Turbo engine in the BMW 335d with 210 kW (286 hp) and 580 Nm. The dynamic and powerful straight six-cylinder engine accelerates to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds.

Auto Start Stop function

Red lights, traffic jams, road works – in everyday driving situations there are countless instances where the engine is idling, unnecessarily burning fuel. The Auto Start Stop function, a BMW EfficientDynamics technology, makes this a thing of the past.

The Auto Start Stop function switches off the engine when the vehicle is not moving or if the driver disengages the clutch. The intelligent electronics system has already calculated how much the battery is charged and if other systems – such as the air conditioning or rear windscreen heating – require more energy. When the journey continues, the engine is started immediately when the clutch is engaged.

The result is the elimination of unnecessary fuel consumption and emissions.

The Auto Start Stop function is used in the four-cylinder models with a manual six-speed transmission

Seven-speed sports automatic transmission

Increase driving pleasure in your BMW 3 Series Convertible with the seven-speed sports automatic transmission with double clutch. This transmission changes gears with lightning speed and without any power gap.

The double-clutch switches between the two separate drivetrains, one for the even gears second, fourth and sixth and one for the odd gears first, third, fifth, seventh. This means that if you accelerate the BMW 3 Series Convertible in third gear for example, the fourth gear is already engaged. This produces extremely fast shift times with the resulting acceleration figures approaching sports car level. And because faster gear changes produce less friction loss, the sports automatic transmission saves 0.2 litres of petrol every 100 kilometres.

The gearshift paddles on the steering wheel mean that you can change gear in manual mode without ever having to take your hands from the wheel. When braking the engine speed is adjusted to the next gear while the rear wheels offer increased grip and optimal stability.

Dynamic Traction Control

When driving on loose gravel or snow, activating Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) increases traction by improving tolerance for wheel slip, thus enabling the BMW 3 Series Convertible to gain better traction.

If the front wheels are stuck in snow and cannot spin properly, this leads to slip on the rear wheels and DSC acts to change engine output: the power needed for forward movement is reduced. Switching to DTC has a positive effect on this situation, as traction is improved without a loss of power. DTC allows you to drive at the limits without fear of exceeding them. It increases wheel slip on the drive wheels in order to ensure optimum traction on any surface. This allows the behaviour of the BMW 3 Series Convertible to be controlled entirely by the driver, with the DSC system taking a back seat. Drivers who appreciate a more sporting driving style can activate DTC to allow for controlled wheel skid, or "drift"

Bluetooth audio streaming

The soundtrack of the day is pure joy: with Bluetooth audio streaming, a BMW ConnectedDrive technology, your Bluetooth-compatible Smartphone can be seamlessly connected to the BMW 3 Series Convertible HiFi system without affecting the telephone function.

Bluetooth-compatible devices with A2DP and AVRCP protocols are supported. Such devics include the Nokia N97 and the Sony Ericsson W995. For further information please visit www.bmw.com/bluetooth
